Busy Busy Spring

We've been so busy that blog posting has taken a back burner. Here are some highlights:

Heres a visit to the Philadephia Zoo in front of Ben's favorite - the Giraffe's.

Here's Ben dining with his pals in Boston. Boy, he thought he was all grown-up!

And here is Momma P's dream picture: Bookclub and Baby Bookclub all together for the first time.*

*The fabulous Ms. Cooper is missing from this picture. So bookclub is not quite complete in this picture.

Pretzels got nothin' on Ben

So these first two pictures are from this year's Hopewell Memorial Day parade.

As you can see, Ben is WAY bigger than 2 jumbo pretzels AND he can walk around with them. And eat them.

Just for a point of reference - this is last year's Memoral Day parade.

Crazy!

That was Then, This is Now

So, a year ago, on Mother's Day 2006, was Ben's Bris. The picture on the left was taken moments before the ceremony started. The picture on the right was taken yesterday, on Mother's Day 2007.
Aside for Ben's dorky hair in both pictures and his general adorable-ness, nothing much is the same.

How tall am I now?

More farm pics.

Have you seen this chicken?

Last weekend we went to the kite festival at Terhune Orchards. We arrived with a boy and halfway through, had a chicken on our hands. It was quite a festival!

On the beach and loving it

Ben had a grand time in Florida for niece Jill's wedding. Ben greeted each and every cousin (of which there are many) like a long-lost best friend ~ with slobbery kisses, squeals of delight, and clingy hugs. Ben also made best friends with the passengers on the plane in the seat behind us ~ flirting and playing peeka-boo for hours on end.
This was a trip of many firsts: first plane ride, first wedding, first dip in the ocean, first night's sleep in a hotel (slept through the night, thank you very much), first exhausted car seat to stroller extendo nap.
Ben was sure a trooper.

Nothing like Bookclub

Momma P made a quick trip to Boston for her birthday. Bookclub celebrated the visit with a stop at Upstairs on the Square. The entire weekend was a delicious treat.

Thanks Uncle Steven

Thanks Uncle Steven for taking wonderful pictures at my party. I love this one of playing a duet with cousin Will.

Exactly one year ago (if we're going by days of the week)

Please bear with me... but I'm feeling all sentimental and frankly, still in shock, about the fact that we have Ben in our lives.

Last year, on the third Tuesday in March was the ONLY day during bedrest I did not take a shower before Nick left for work.

And, it was the ONLY day during bedrest that I went up and and down the stairs twice before noon.

And, it was the ONLY day that I went into labor. Right around 12:30 pm I started feeling funny and called Nick at work. I then called Dr. Chitour's office. Nick came home, we went to the doctor's, everything seemed status quo. By 930pm we were at the hospital being "monitored".

And, well, the rest is history.

Dear Arizona Aunties

Let me play a song for you on the piano you gave me for Christmas...

No wait, let me grab the camera from my mom.

Visits from Old Friends

2 weeks ago Momma P's old pal from kindergarten came to hang out with Ben. Ben had a great time, what with David's long hair, beard, and glasses - the fun was endless.

It's not what I expected

So, exactly a year ago I was laying on the couch dreaming and praying of a happy and healthy baby. While trying to be industrious during my period of house arrest, I can now confess that even while reading/knitting/embriodering/blogging... what I was really doing (consciously and subconsciously) was praying for BP to arrive safely, quickly, and at 38 weeks weighing 6 pounds.

Well, 3 out of 4 ain't bad.
We got safely and quickly, but missed the mark by a few weeks and more than a few pounds.

Nothing of this past year went as I expected.
I never expected the bedrest. I never expected having a preemie and basically living at the hospital for 5 weeks. I never expected the fear of watching your baby turn blue as you try and feed him 22 ml of breast milk.

I never expected to become best friends with the Ameda Purely Yours breast pump; learn to carry a baby and an apenea monitor without dropping one and setting off the other; and I especially never expected to have to go to battle with an insurance company over medicine for my baby.

I knew I would be tired. But I never expected to be this tired. For this long.

I also never expected for my heart to leap as much when my baby reached for me for the first time. Or, the first time when he smiled when he saw me (or the millionith time). Or laughed out loud. Or curled up tight in my arms. Or snuggled in close to that space between my neck and shoulder. Or when he clapped at the end of his favorite book. Or squealed in delight at the sight of our cat, or his dad.

To see this baby grow from such a tiny creature to this robust, hilarious, wonderful baby has been a true gift.
I never expected to be this lucky.

We Made It 11 Months and 1 Hour

It has always been my goal for Ben to make it one year without getting sick. And while we haven't kept him in a plastic bubble like the John Travolta character from the 1970's tv movie, at times it's felt pretty close to that.

A few months ago Ben had a rash on his face that we suspected was a food related allergy. When I called the doctor's office the phone nurse started asking a lot of probing questions. I could tell she was trying to determine if Ben had Hoof and Mouth Disease, (which is typically spread from kid to kid in daycare/school/you get the idea).

Our conversation went something like this:
Momma P: "But he hasn't been around other kids"
Nurse: "He could have caught it when you took him out."
Momma P : " But we don't take him out."
Nurse: " No, like at the supermarket or the mall."
Momma P: "Again, we -don't - take - him - out"
Nurse, sounding aghast: "Not even to the mall?"
Momma P:"Especially not the mall."
Nurse: "But you take him to the supermarket."
Momma P: "Only twice."
Nurse: "Ok, it's probably a food allergy."

We stopped feeding Ben apples, pears, and anything made by Earth's Best (which we now call Earth's Rash) and the rash cleared up.

Ben turned 11 months on February 22nd. At one in the morning he woke up screaming. Earlier that evening Nick and I had discussed finally letting the kid cry himself to sleep when he awoke in the middle of the night. But when I heard him screaming something sounded different. I went in and the boy little guy's face was bright red and he was very hot.

Ben had his very first fever. 102.9 . So, officially, Ben made it to 11 months and 1 hour without getting sick.

By the next afternoon the fever was gone and we were left with a very clingy baby with a little runny nose. The doctor checked him out Friday and his ears and throat were perfect.

Ben's still a little cough-y these days, but seems to have made it through unscathed. And while we didn't reach our goal, we're pretty proud of how far Ben has come.

Tricks are for Kids

Something has clicked in our guy's brain - it seems like each day he's doing some new trick.

He consistently waves "Hi" and "Bye-Bye".
He "kisses" his stuffed animals.
He claps his hands.
And, on three different nights when I said "OK, it's time to get out of the bathtub" he has shaken his head "No" and continued to splash around. Typically, when I say that, he reaches out for me to pull him out of the tub.

Crazy stuff.

Next week we anticipate he will be solving algebraic equations.

New Visitors, New Tricks

Cousin Lizzybug came to visit last weekend! We love Cousin Lizzybug. Ben learned that if you press his nose, it says "Beep". He was very interested in Cousin Lizzybug and all of the nose beeping.

We have also learned that our kid has a VERY ticklish spot on his ribs, under his left arm. If you just act like you are going to tickle him there, he cracks up and squeals in delight.

Ben has learned to shove (with not much grace, but with improved accuracy) Cheerios and "Puffs" into his mouth. He is very proud of this new skill. And, we are pleased that this can keep Ben occupied for minutes at a time, giving us a chance to prepare a meal or bottle for him.

This morning Nick went in to get Ben and a few minutes later I joined them. Ben was very delighted to see me and we had some cuddle time. Then I left to go take a shower and all of a sudden I heard this voice call out "Mom".

Nick confirmed, that yes indeed, Ben had called out "Mom" as he was reaching for the door to his room, as if searching for me. Yikes. That was freaky. It was just so clear. Much like those "oh he's not smiling, it's just gas" facial expressions in the begining --> the rational side of me is pretty sure it was just luck on Ben's part. The totally sappy side of me is jumping for joy "He said Mom! He called me Mom!"

Stay Warm.
